Technical Rope Rescue

The Team responds regularly to help hikers who find themselves stuck on a cliffside or motorists who accidentally roll over the side of a cliff. For these incidents, being proficient in setting up and manning rope systems to perform such a rescue is paramount. Technical rope rescue is a specialized skill set that requires extensive training, experience, and knowledge of equipment and techniques to perform safely and effectively. As a Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) team, SBCSAR incorporates technical rope rescue operations as part of its core training curriculum.

Extensive Training

Every year, each team member participates in many hours of training to ensure their rope skills proficiency meets the SBCSAR team's high standards. These training sessions cover a wide range of scenarios, such as vertical and horizontal rescue techniques, anchor building, and rappelling. SBCSAR team members must demonstrate their proficiency in these skills before they are allowed to participate in technical rope rescue missions. In addition, team members regularly participate in scenario-based training exercises that simulate real-world rescue scenarios to keep their skills sharp.

Range of Applications

Technical rope rescue operations can range from simple to complex, depending on the terrain and the nature of the rescue. Some situations may require only a simple lowering or raising of a person, while others may require more intricate rope systems and specialized equipment. Technical rope rescue can also involve other skills such as rigging, hauling systems, and high-angle rescue. The SBCSAR team is equipped with state-of-the-art rope rescue equipment and employs the latest techniques and best practices in the field, including using specialized tools like capstan and vortex systems for advanced rope rescue scenarios.
